Fixing password authentication to search results

Sometime around mid-2015, the UWPR updated computer hardware including the machine that was running the Apache web server. As part of this hardware update, various software was updated too. Unfortunately both the software updates and other changes caused a problem with our web server password authentication to search results. Effectively password authentication was not being enforced and the user passwords stored in the UWPR project application were not being propogated to the password file used by the Apache web server. (We're not that sophisticated so there are two different systems setup to use the login/passwords that you select.)

For any users who signed up in the UWPR project applicaton between mid-2015 and April 5, 2016 (or if you changed your password in that time) you will have to log back into the project system and set your password again. You don't have to select a new password; just entering your password again will allow our Apache web server password file to be properly updated.

If you don't know your UWPR project application password, click on the "Forgot your password?" link on the top left corner of this page and recover your password. If you do this, skip to step 5 below.

If you can log into the UWPR project application but not log into the password prompt to access search results using the same username/password, follow these screenshots to set/reset your password so that it gets propogated to the Apache web server password file:

  1. Log into the UWPR project application.
  2. Click on the "Account" tab.
  3. Click the "Password" link.
  4. Set your password and hit "Save". As I mentioned above, you don't have to choose a new password. You just have to set any password here (go ahead and re-type your current password) so that it gets propogated to our other password file that controls access to your search results.
  5. Now try to access your data again using the username and password you just set. If you have any questions or problems, contact me at engj@uw.edu.
